Satellite speaker technology for cost-effective coverage

A key advantage of the 8198 IP PoE+ ceiling speaker is its satellite speaker technology. One powered 8198 can drive and supervise up to three 1198 Satellite Ceiling Speakers from a single PoE+ network connection.

Instead of running Ethernet to every speaker location, you run CAT5/CAT6 cable from the 8198 to each 1198 satellite in a daisy-chain. Power and audio are shared across the cluster. The total available 16 W of audio power is divided equally. For example, with one satellite each speaker can output 8 W, and with three satellites each unit receives 4 W.

This design reduces the number of switch ports, licenses and cable drops you need. At the same time, the 8198 automatically detects and supervises attached 1198 satellite speakers. You can see how many satellites are connected from the 8198 web interface or from an Algo supervision controller, which helps you confirm that coverage is intact.

Wideband audio, ambient noise response and talkback

Inside the 8198 IP PoE+ ceiling speaker, a 6.5″ coaxial driver sits in an optimized sealed enclosure. It supports G.722 wideband and full-band codecs like Opus, which gives you better speech intelligibility and more natural sound than narrowband G.711. As a result, voice pages, public address messages and even music playback sound clearer and more professional.

In addition, the speaker includes an integrated microphone. This microphone supports ambient noise detection and talkback. With Ambient Noise Response enabled, the 8198 can automatically adjust its volume based on background noise levels. When the area becomes louder, the speaker increases its output; when the area is quiet, it reduces the volume. This keeps announcements audible without being harsh. Talkback capability also allows two-way conversations in supported configurations.

SIP, multicast and VoIP / UC integration

The 8198 IP PoE+ ceiling speaker is a fully SIP-compliant endpoint and also supports multicast paging. It can register one or more SIP extensions for live paging, ring/notification tones and emergency alerts. Additional page, ring and emergency extensions are supported, and you can map them to different use cases.

Because it supports SIP, multicast, Polycom Group Page and mass notification platforms like InformaCast and Syn-Apps Revolution, the 8198 integrates with most hosted, cloud and on-premise VoIP systems. It is also certified for native compatibility with Microsoft Teams via the Teams SIP Gateway. In addition, the speaker supports secure SIP with TLS, mTLS and SRTP for encrypted signaling and media.

Configuration is done through a browser-based web GUI or by centralized auto-provisioning. This makes large deployments easier to roll out and manage, especially in multi-building environments.
