DESCRIPTION

The 8188 IP ceiling speaker from Algo is a wideband SIP and multicast IP speaker designed for installation in drop ceilings. It delivers clear audio for voice paging, emergency alerting and background music in classrooms, offices, corridors and common areas. Because it is powered by PoE (IEEE 802.3af), a single Ethernet cable provides both power and data.

The 8188 is a fully compliant third-party SIP endpoint. As a result, it works with most hosted, cloud and on-premise VoIP telephone systems without the need for a separate amplifier or analog gateway.

Wideband HD audio for clear announcements

The 8188 IP ceiling speaker supports the G.722 wideband HD voice codec. Therefore, speech is more intelligible and natural than with traditional narrowband audio. This improves clarity for voice announcements and emergency notifications, and helps achieve better intelligibility in education and public-address environments.

In addition, the 8188 is music-capable. Using an Algo IP paging adapter or another compatible source, you can stream background music to the speaker as multicast audio. The music stream can run at a lower priority, so live paging, emergency alerts or scheduled tones automatically interrupt it when needed.

Ambient noise compensation and talkback

The 8188 includes an integrated microphone. This microphone supports ambient noise compensation, which continuously monitors room noise and automatically adjusts the speaker volume. When the environment becomes louder, the speaker increases its output. When the room is quiet, it reduces the level again. As a result, announcements stay audible without being excessively loud.

The same microphone also enables talkback. In supported configurations, users can have two-way conversations through the 8188 IP ceiling speaker, which is useful for classrooms, help points or supervision from a central location.

Multicast scalability and zone paging

The 8188 IP ceiling speaker supports multicast send and receive, which makes it easy to scale paging across a building, campus or enterprise. A single SIP-registered 8188 can multicast audio to many IP speakers, strobe lights, paging adapters and multicast-capable IP phones. Devices that only receive multicast do not need their own SIP registrations, which reduces license usage and configuration overhead.

You can configure multicast zone paging for up to 50 zones from one 8188 IP speaker. Zones can be selected in two ways. First, you can map multicast zones to individual Page SIP extensions on the speaker. Second, to minimize registrations, you can use DTMF keypress selection from the dialing telephone. This flexibility allows fine-grained paging control for classrooms, departments and common areas.

Emergency notification and alerting

The 8188 supports Emergency Alert SIP extensions for safety and security notifications. You can register multiple Emergency Alert extensions and assign a different WAV file to each one. For example, you might use distinct tones or messages for lockdown, evacuation, shelter-in-place and all-clear events.

To trigger an alert, you simply dial the corresponding Emergency Alert extension or activate it from a dry-contact button wired to the relay input. The 8188 then plays the selected WAV file over the speaker, either for a preset duration or until a “call to cancel” extension stops it. This makes emergency alerting fast and reliable from any telephone or compatible device.

Loud ringing and night bell

In addition to paging and alerts, the 8188 can act as an IP loud ringer or night bell. When a Ring SIP extension is called, the speaker plays a ring tone WAV file stored in its internal memory. Typically, that Ring extension is part of a ring group together with one or more telephones. The WAV file plays for the duration of the ring event until the call is answered.

You can choose from built-in ring tones or upload custom WAV files for specific applications. If you need both audible and visual ring indication, you can pair the 8188 with an IP strobe using multicast or relay control. This combination works well in noisy areas such as workshops, production floors and loading docks.

Easy installation, PoE power and typical applications

The 8188 IP ceiling speaker is designed for drop-ceiling installation using four built-in clamps. Optional accessories are available when you need additional support or installation in damp locations.

Configuration is handled through a browser-based web interface or via auto-provisioning. The 8188 is a self-amplified PoE speaker, so you do not need a separate amplifier or local power supply. It is powered via PoE (IEEE 802.3af) and is certified for commercial use.

Typical deployments include school classrooms and hallways, offices, hospitals, retail stores, cafeterias, kitchens and shared spaces. In these environments, the 8188 handles day-to-day paging, scheduled bells and tones, safety messages and emergency notifications.
